“From La Monte Young I found out about The Velvet Underground and The Stooges,” Zach of Philadelphia punk trio Lantern told Vice last year. For many, the trajectory of such a discovery would have been the reverse. And fans of Lantern’s raw, bluesy garage-rock may be surprised to hear the frontman is a fan of the experimental composer. But the band’s pedigree runs deep. Zach and Emily met while attending school in Nova Scotia where they studied music and English respectively. Zach even performed in Rhys Chatham’s 200 guitar army in London a few years back. And Young’s exercises in minimalism and drone aren’t far from the dissonance of Lantern’s catalogue, especially on tracks like “Fool’s Gold” off their latest EP, Dream Mine.
